Well last night I logged on and I was looking for an RPG I was going to buy the witcher 3, and then i notice in the coming soon section Fallout 4. I have never played any of the other fallout games but have heard great things about them. Release is November 10th.
Here is the video that made me say I think i will preorder this
I've played Fallout since the original wayyy back when. I've always loved the series in spite of (because of?) its quirks. I'm really hoping that they've gotten the FPS mechanics of this one right as Fallout 3 was near impossible to play that way. I'm also super excited to get into weapon crafting and see if it's really as deep as they say. I've been waiting forever for a game that gives near unlimited options for crafting/modifying weapons.

I havent played the previous version of the games so this short review will not be doing any comparing to the previous ones.
Initial load was very slow, but the game didnt have to load very frequently after that and when it did it loaded very quickly. Very slow start to the game, which is fine you have to get the little backstory for the game which is good because it means i didnt need to play all the other games to understand this one as it has its own separate story. Some of the slow parts include getting your little back story, customizing your characters look, selecting your characters attributes (S.P.E.C.I.A.L). I found the user interface on some things a bit of a pain. For instance it is hard to tell how much weight you have quickly. Everything is hidden in the 60-70's green of like old pcs. A little hard to tell if the equipment you are finding is better than the equipment you have equipped and their isn't a whole lot of direction as to where you are supposed to be going other than a little tiny mark on your compass or going into your map.
Well after the slow parts are over you are released into an open world area(kinda)each area is quarantined off by radiation and you are only allowed to be in the playable area they want you to be in. More to come on that later. For the most part the game plays very similar to red dead redemption with much more interaction with your surroundings. I am finding that unlike skyrim (my only real rpg experience) there actually is a reason to take nearly any and all possible items. The workshop which I found quite quickly had somewhat odd button experience and didnt really seem like it needs to be, but maybe theres a bigger need for these other buttons im currently not really using.
Well after talking to the first few people i don't know if i like that the character has a voice. Also in talking to people some of the dialog choices seem to be difficult if its one you are supposed to be asking. They are kind of vague. But when he talks it makes it a little clearer.
And thats all for the first 2 hours of play. I slowplayed a lot of the beginning because as I said previously I am new to fallout so I wanted to try and learn as much as I could and not miss anything. But the first 15 minutes in E3 gameplay is after you leave the vault which was basically an hour of slowplay in itself.
Some of that stuff is keeping with the way it has always been in the Fallout series. I'll do a mini-review tomorrow after I get some good time with it this evening.
yea. I plan to do another stage once im a bit further into it. but i wanted to get something up right away with my thoughts for the people who are on the fence. Especially those like me that like rpg's but dont need to have every single one. I saw the witcher and waited for this as it was supposed to be quite a bit better, so far im not dissapointed.
Originally a targeted fire mode in the first turn-based Fallout games. The basic mechanism is still the same with the big difference being that now time isn't stopped when in V.A.T.S., only slowed down. This adds the need to be quick with your decisions whereas previously you could take your time and really weigh your options if in a pinch. The system is based off of Action Points, AP, which are in turn based off of your characters stats. In the original games you had a certain number of AP per turn but now they recharge with time or chems. When the system is brought up during combat the closest enemy is highlighted automatically and each body part can be selected. A percentage will be displayed with each body part, representing your chance to hit based off of your current weapon, skill with said weapon, accuracy mods/perks, distance, etc.
Obviously headshots are generally the best way to do damage but this must be weighed along with the chance to make the shot. Each shot costs a certain amount of AP, again based on stats, and you can perform as many actions as your AP will allow. 50% chance at a head shot? Take two and you're set. You can also select different or multiple enemies within a "turn" as long as you have enough AP. A more technical approach, useful with powerful enemies, is to target certain body parts to damage/cripple them. Need to pick that Deathclaw off from range but aren't fast enough to get away while shooting? Aim for the legs and once they are damaged enough the enemy will only be able to hobble slowly. You'll still need to be pretty powerful to take on Deathclaws but with a good rifle this is an easy way to get rid of them. I've read that there is a build-up critical bar in Fallout 4 that allows you to choose when to use it as opposed to the old passive percentage based system but don't know quite how it works yet.
The best part about Fallout games is that the majority of what you'll do/see/discover is in no way related to the main quest. It's all just out there waiting for you to find it. The main story of Fallout 3 is only a 24-25hr job but I put well over 100hrs into the game and was still finding new stuff.
A couple of tips after a bit of forum diving, some exploratory play and my experience with previous Fallout games. Invest early in Intelligence, Scrounger and Luck. Intelligence will help you more XP, Scrounger will really come in handy to not run out of ammo and Luck....well Luck is actually a hidden gem in this game. It helps with everything, actually helps not just claims to, and it has perks that will stack to do some pretty awesome stuff. Also, stick primarily to investing in whichever perk buffs the type of weapon you know you will use most often. Not necessarily the one you're using right now. Maybe try and do two if you're like me and have a long-mid range primary and a switch for cqb. But not more than two.
Oh yeah, caves. Be very wary of caves. Deathclaws love caves. And eating you alive. If there are any questions drop them here or feel free to PM me, I'll do my best to answer.

Enjoying this game more and more. Have probably 10 hours in now and feel like ive still barely scratched the surface. I am not one of those people that is in a rush to get all the missions done. I like to walk/run my way to each one and explore everything i find on the way. I do know however this will get me into trouble as it did in skyrim as i will meet people kind of out of sequence and also end up with tons of side jobs not pertinent to the main story and that will annoy me. On skyrim my list of things to do is/was gigantic between starting missions and finding a new mission on my way to the mission. Plus i found things before i was supposed to ended up grabbing them and selling them only to later find out i needed that item so the quest can never be completed.
Personally i do not like the power suit, and hope i can build my character up to be powerful enough that i dont really need it. Im still in the vault supplied outfit just upgraded, along with some misc things i have scavenged off of my kills along the way. I think tonight i am gonig to try and craft an outfit similar to what i am currently wearing but much less corny looking. Being the only bright blue thing on the screen is kind of annoying (even tho i dont see myself except when in conversation) I am going to make myself look much more like a lone wolf drifter.
The first good armor upgrade I found was near Diamond City. Keep an eye out for a distress signal on the radio, it will lead you to a small firefight with the Brotherhood of Steel against feral ghouls. After its over there should be a body you can scavenge for Brotherhood Fatigues. It's a full body set with no mod options but it's better than the Vault Jumpsuit + Raider armor I had. Power Armor got nerfed bad in this game with the introduction of fusion cells to power it. I seriously hope I start finding new/better armor options soon because right now it looks like they left a lot on the table there. I'd recommend grabbing as many missions as possible as soon as possible, though not necessarily completing them, just collecting them.
Overall I'm pretty impressed with the game thus far. Seems to be keeping well with most of the Fallout traditions but made upgrades/changes in some good places. Building a house from scratch is garbage though, near fucking impossible for me last night when I tried. No telling how much wood/steel I wasted on that. There needs to be an update resolving that quickfast.
Unless necessary or really beneficial to me I doubt i will build a house. I intend on hunkering down in abandoned places to follow the character ive decided to play loner, drifter, modern day cowboy type.
made my first big boo boo last night. Didnt realize i could add perks beyond the first line as they looked locked. I used my first 10 level ups in the first row, thought i had to max each of those items before i could select the one below it, so my build is quite a bit weaker than what it could/should be.
Ohh, that's terrible. Should be finding lots of caps though. You can also increase each of your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats by one point instead of picking a perk.
On a brighter note I've figured out how the building creation works so I'm starting on a tower in Sanctuary. If I can ever figure out how to get screenshots from the Xbox to my computer I'll post some up once I've gotten the base shell finished. I really wish there were more armors and more options for clothing mods aside from just the stupid Vault jumpsuit. Can't wait for mods to start working, I know someone will do some big armor/weapons packs.
Apparently their are a few other ones you just need to do the railroad mission first. then green army fatigues and a few others can be modded.
Yea i dont think the perk thing is going to hurt too bad due to the unlimited leveling, just sucks that my guy is weaker than i think he should be, plus i am not wearing real strong underarmour because i didnt want to wear the jumpsuit. I went with the road leathers, they arent real strong but atleast u can wear armor over them. I wanted to stick with the minuteman duster or whatever as i like how it looked, but you cant wear armor with it so it was making it really difficult against mutants and such.
At or towards the end of the Minutmen questline you'll get a new outfit, basically a blue waistcoat over combat armor. That and the Courser outfit look pretty cool but still won't hold a candle to real leveled up armor. I'm just trying to level up enough to start getting Sturdy/Heavy Combat armor as it looks much better than the base. If the mods made for this follow the same pattern as the last few Bethesda games have gone then should be plenty of options once mod support is online for XB1. You know someone will make a Mad Max armor that can stand up to high level enemies. I'm hoping someone makes a new version of the NCR Ranger armor from New Vegas. You'd love that.

And mods will be allowed by 3rd party developers just have to get approved by ms. So probably no nude mod etc but still should balance console version closer to pc.
Yeah. When Bethesda announced the game at E3 they said the XB1 version would support mods. They're trying to somewhat bridge the gap between PC and console this way. I believe they've said that they are working on a PS4 version too. As Baby Cow said they'll have to be approved by MS but I don't see that being an issue for most of what will likely be developed anyway.
I figure there will be a handful of weapon/armor packs, a bunch of smaller unique weapons/armor taken from other sources, some new companions, probably new assets for building settlements and graphics tweaks at first. Later I'd look for people to start building their own unique quests and storylines, maybe even new areas. It's not supposed to get started until at least late Q1/early Q2 next year.

Ive done some main quest missions but for the most part little filler missions and just exploring. Loving it so far tho. Few little annoyances but overall good game.
This game is continually impressing me with the story and random things u find.
I however hit level 20 last night and think even without crafting I'm already getting op. May have to up the difficulty as it only takes 1 shot to kill most enemies when sneaking and only like 3-4 for super mutants.
Found a way to make clothes useful. The Underground Railroad quest line is supposed to unlock a ballistic weave mod that you can use on regular clothing and it gets pretty powerful at higher levels. I'm about to boot up the Xbox and investigate. I'll report what I find. I hope this pans out so I can build my Mad Max style character.
I got a pistol last night from a legendary mutant, and its incredible. I'm level 11, and its taking 1 shot in sneak to kill mutants, not tried it on ay other enemies yet.
I'm still overawed by the game. It's so big, and there are so many little funny things dotted around. Also, my explorer head get me in so much trouble. I keel coming up against enemy I have no chance against.
I've started to cobbl together my brotherhood armour. It's really pissing off my current companion - I can see me killing him at some point.
I still haven't done aa proper settlement, I can't decide where I want it. Sanctuary is in such a crappy location - I've found a boathouse that my work great. It's right on the water for purified water, and will only need protecting from 3 sides. Also, the current buildings are pretty good.
What's everyone spending their perk points on? I'm only level 11, and I have 4 points sat there because I can't decide how to use them lol.
I dropped one on each to find extra ammo and caps, I max armor and weapon crafting as soon as I get a new level available, same with non-auto rifles, one to get better barter prices, Strong Back to carry more weight and one level of Science. Other than the crafting/weapons skills I alternate between a new Perk and upping one of my SPECIAL skills. Bumping SPECIALs will help a lot more than you think.
And if you just want to burn a perk point, buy Bloody Mess. It does give an extra 5% global damage per level so it is practical but it's other effects are just so much fun.
Oh yeah, forgot to update the Ballistic Weave investigation. Wasn't able to get that far before work tonight and will be too busy to really play again until likely Wednesday. However, I did look into it more doing some forum surfing at work and it seems legit. Just complete the Freedom Trail quest, join the Railroad and start doing quests for them. Eventually P.A.M. will give you a quest involving a DIA cache or somesuch. After that talk to Tinker Tom, he'll give you some armored gear and the Ballistic Weave mod will be available at armor benches for clothing after that. I don't know what it works with and what it doesn't yet, just that this is how to get it. You must have the Armorer perk unlocked to at least the first level.
I would also recommend not doing any more Railroad quests after this until you know which side you'll take at the end. The quest you need for this comes pretty early but I know the Railroad will eventually have missions that will determine a lot of the rest of your game and can't be undone.
Wow I went a completely different way with perks. I accidentally added quite a bit to the top row. Luck really helped I find caps everywhere. But I went with increased power on non automatic weapons Aldo added to my sniper perk then I did the lock picking and hacking lone wolf or whatever to raise my carry weight with the dog and then the armor and mods. (I would have used them on something else if I did it again, I don't find crafting to be worth i5, almost always find better weapons and armor)
I've also played every Fallout except the abomination that was Tactics and played through them multiple times, so I kinda have a system in place that's automatic for me. I've actually still got the first rifle I found in the game modded as far as I can get it, but I eschew energy weapons in Fallout.
That's part of what makes the game so awesome if that everyone can play their own way and for the most part you can't say any one way is better than the other.
